Named Asia-Pacific’s Number One MUST-VISIT destination in 2019 by Lonely Planet, Western Australia’s Great South West Edge Drive is the perfect road trip for you and your family! Winding your way along the coast to uncover hidden gems, the breathtaking coastline takes you through wine regions, forests and even the desert. Home to multiple once-in-a-lifetime experiences this road trip is perfect for your next family holiday and will only take between 3-7 days! With four Discovery Parks locations that sit right along the touring route for this spectacular road trip we’re going to show you all the things you must see and do along the way.
Start in Perth
Kicking off close to the city we head to Discovery Parks – Perth Airport. There are so many attractions to visit throughout Perth’s spectacular city centre, including WA’s most unique attraction, The Bell Tower or take on your wild side a visit over 1500 animals at the Perth Zoo. Feel more like relaxing? Wander the gardens of Kings Parks or visit one of the many new laneways filled with bars, restaurants, and local delights. If you’d prefer to stay in, we understand why, with a playground, swimming pool and BBQ areas, our park has so much to offer kids young and old.
Perth to Bunbury – 2 hour Drive
Just two hours from Perth, perched at the edge of Koombana Bay, you will find the charming town of Bunbury. Stay at Discovery Parks – Bunbury Foreshore, a great base for the beautiful south west coast. While the beach is at your doorstep there is heaps to do in our park. Have a friendly hit of tennis or shoot some hoops before you jump into the swimming pool to freshen up! The kids will be entertained with a decked-out games room and bouncing pillow. They can even tear around the park on pedal cars which are available for hire.
When it comes to exploring you must say hello to the friendly and playful bottlenose dolphins as Koombana Bay provides a great resting area and breeding ground for these majestic creatures. Only 5 minutes from park is the Dolphin Discovery Centre which provides captivating experiences including activity centres, feeding programs and multiple tours which can offer an opportunity for you and the dolphins to meet and interact with each other. After a busy day by the sea immerse yourself in Bunbury’s street and public art, the largest collection in regional Australia!
Bunbury to Woodman Point – 2 hour drive
Next stop, Woodman Point! Another short two-hour drive to for you and the kids, only enough time to listen to the Wiggles album once (thank god). Before you arrive take the time to stop at some of the picturesque seaside havens along the way. Preston Beach is a hotspot for fishing fanatics, nature lovers and water babies. This pristine beach is perfect for an afternoon stroll and coffee. Take in the wetlands that surround Yalgorup National Park, which is swarming with wildlife and not to mention one of the oldest organisms on earth, thrombolites, a living fossil!
Jump back in the car and fuel your bellies with snacks to keep you going before arriving at Discovery Parks – Woodman Point. Positioned in the unique location within the Woodman Point regional nature reserve, the park offers comfortable accommodation set in a tranquil parkland setting, the perfect oasis for those looking for a relaxing holiday for the whole family. Entertain the kids with our bouncing pillow, playground or swimming pool or head to Woodman Point Ammo Jetty for a day. Once you’ve explored the park, make sure to visit Fremantle, famous for its Victorian and Georgian era and bustling with cafés, restaurants and stunning historical landmarks. Make sure you check out the Fremantle Markets, operating for over 120 years this is a popular spot for both locals and tourist, so check out the fresh produce this region has to offer!
Woodman Point to Swan Valley – 50 minute drive
We’re heading to our final destination on our trip. We know the kids may be getting restless at the thought of jumping back in the car but make it exciting and begin a game like Eye Spy or family bingo to avoid the whingeing and fighting between siblings. Lucky the next stop is only a 50-minute drive! Nestled in the Perth foothills, in the heart of the famous Swan Valley wine region, Discovery Parks – Swan Valley offers a relaxing environment for the last destination on your Great South West road trip.
Famously known for its world-class wineries, breweries, distilleries, and countless gourmet eateries. Wine and dine yourself in one of the exquisite fine dining restaurants or enjoy a good old pub meal before heading back to the reality of life. This is the perfect time for the oldies to enjoy a well-deserved drink and nibbles overlooking the stunning landscape. But, Swan Valley isn’t just for the adults. Scenic walk and bike trails allow the kids to run free and experience loads of nature and outdoor fun. There’s no shortage of fun in our park for the kids with a pool, playground and games room!
All good things must come to an end and it’s time to pack up and head home! On the trip home take the time to reflect with the kids on everyone’s favourite things about the trip, a great way to keep those memories alive and keep the kids entertained for the drive.
