Discover our top 10 Ice Cream Shops

Piccolina Gelateria – Melbourne, VIC

We’re a little flexible here on “ice cream”. But Melbourne is famous for their gelato (and it’d be a shame to leave them out). The recipes are all-natural and traditional – her recipes are a family secret, passed down from the owner’s father. The options change seasonally, but if you’re lucky you might get to try their loved salted caramel.

New Zealand Natural – Airlie Beach, QLD

You’ll be sure to have a hankering for ice cream in the tropics. International ice cream experts New Zealand Natural have set up shop in Airlie Beach right in front of the bay. You’ve got to mix and match here, because you’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t try at least a few. Butterscotch-inspired ‘Hokey Pokey’ is essential, but pile on the ‘Cool Bananas D Lite’ to shake things up.

48 Flavours – Adelaide, SA

Pandan may not be in your day-to-day meals at home, but it’ll be on your mind once you’ve got a taste of it. This shop kicked down the doors of the Adelaide ice cream scene – and have made a lasting impression. Their twist: they use South Aussie milk and top ingredients from the Adelaide Central Market next-door. If you’ve got a bub who’s lactose intolerant, peanut butter soy will be their best memory of summer.

The Ice Cream Shop – Robe, SA

What do we love about this place? It’s got character. The funky décor boasts wall-to-wall painted murals and gargoyles that insist you buy fudge. Enjoy the fun atmosphere with your double-scoop. While the triple swirl is like looking into a kaleidoscope, we guarantee even the adults will enjoy the rainbow. Do you always go for the reliable classics? The vanilla is a silky smooth dream.

North American couple the Kulds have paired the best of local produce with their favourite flavours from home. They use pure Western Australian cream, free range eggs and organic milk to whip up these sweet concoctions. What might grace your spoon? Peanut butter M&M, mocha chip and even some holiday inspired flavours (spooky Halloween ice cream, anyone?).

Valhalla Ice Cream – Hobart, TAS

See you in Valhalla for the most heavenly flavours of generously scooped ice cream. Their secret? Using the best Tassie cream, and local fruit puree for the sorbets. The lavender ice cream is photogenic – matching the wide open fields of lavender across the state. If a flavour’s good enough to keep you happy, you can buy tubs of the stuff to take home.

This place is truly monumental. With over 90 flavours churned and shared, the folks are dedicated to innovating the art of ice cream. The more unusual ones are worth the adventure: popcorn, Tim Minchin, Christmas cake, and Tom Cruise are a hoot (and delicious to boot). To truly do the flavours justice, go for a waffle cone – it’s what the doctor ordered.
