The first European explorer of the Murray River upstream of Albury was Hamilton Hume, in 1824. By the 1860s landholders were discussing ways of managing the River Murray for better navigation, irrigation, flood and drought control. In 1915 the River Murray Waters Agreement was approved by State and Federal governments and the site of Hume Dam was selected. For more click here.
